Airtel Talks About 5G Preparedness in Nigeria

In a technological move which if executed with proper planning and strategy promises development in network infrastructure in Nigeria, a country which had one of the highest growth rates in the world averaging about 7.5%, according to a report by the World Bank.

Airtel Africa PLC is almost ready for implementing the 5G technology which boasts of higher speeds, less latency, less interference, and better efficiency. Chief Executive Officer, Raghunath Mandava conveyed this in the recent quarterly earnings call. For Africa, this will mean growth in its digital economy, better connectivity, and accessibility.

The Nigeria Communications Commission has already started to working on laying out policies for its deployment after it turned out successful in 6 selected locations in the country. However, whether Nigeria is ready for the 5G network poses an immediate challenge. Mandava is aware of the hurdles that might surface. There are activities like mapping out the framework for 5G technology, the need for more extensive testing and identifying the areas where it can be put to maximum use. The company is expressing keenness and is gearing up to take the responsibilities which will come along. Apart from this, the country also saw an uproar against the government on the recent operations and trials,  because of rumors that it was the causing the coronavirus. The NCC then had to issue several notices to clarify the necessary. There are more challenges ahead and milestones to reach, but the hope for a digital revolution and access to better technology drives the project.
