Renfe has set on sale this Tuesday the opening travel tickets to commute by AVE (Alta Velocidad Espanola) between Madrid and Barcelona, and vice versa, with canines weighing up to 40 kilograms, starting on September 15, therefore fulfilling the commitment announced last July to outspread the expedition of pets previously held in reserve for animals weighing less than 10 kilograms.

Renfe would endorse this trial project in a range of direct and semi-direct AVE trains on the Northeast Corridor, on the Madrid-Barcelona line. One ‘large’ canine per passenger is permissible, with a maximum of two ‘large’ canines per train, always in a secure and fixed space with two specific seats. The operator has specified that assistance dogs and pets weighing less than 10 kilograms that are on board are excluded, which will remain to benefit from the usual commercial guidelines.

The breeds permitted to commute are: Beagle, Bichon, Boxer, Labrador, German Shepherd, Pekingese, Pointer, Pomeranian Bulldog, Rottweiler, Bull Terrier, Poodle, Pug, Chow Chow, Cocker, Collie, Dalmatian, Greyhound, Golden Retriever, Siberian Husky, Schnauzer, Setter, Shar pei, Terrier and Yorkshire. This is how canines are characterized as large breeds, that is, over 40 kilos, are excluded from this regulation: Great Dane, Spanish Mastiff, Dogue de Bordeaux, Tosa Inu, Saint Bernard, Newfoundland or Bullmastiff.

Renfe Viajeros and Nestle Purina have signed a partnership agreement

For this project, Nestle Purina has guided Renfe with a travel guide with virtuous practices, so that regulars and their pets can commute on board the trains in the most pleasant mode, and safeguard the well-being of the animal during their travel. For instance, carry the pets own blanket and toy without sound, avoid feeding the canine during the first three hours before the trip to avert dizziness, or walk him for an extended stretch before the trip so that the pet can relax.

Renfe Viajeros and Nestle Purina have signed a partnership agreement by virtue of which both entities commence to endorse Renfe’s rail transport services for commuting with dogs weighing up to 40 kilograms on AVE and long-distance trains. The association, which was signed at the Madrid Puerta de Atocha station by the CEO of Nestle Purina Spain, Mark El-Khoury, and the CEO of Renfe Viajeros, Sonia Araujo, creates an association framework for the joint promotion of arrangements commercials and other events to advertise the Mascota Grande Project and the rail transport services of Renfe Viajeros.
