Origin Energy Ltd., Australia’s most colossal coal-fuelled power plant, is customary to close seven years early than its previously estimated date. The most recent fossil fuel withdrawal is prompted by an increase in renewables that has steered down electricity rates.

Origin Energy Ltd. could shut down the Eraring facility in a coal-mining territory north of Sydney as early as August 2025 with the plant’s economic feasibility under threat. The firm follows the exit of its rival, AGL Energy Ltd., which declared its plans to begin the closure of its two coal plants last week.

In a statement on Thursday, Frank Calabria, Origin Energy Ltd.’s Chief Executive Officer, noted that in reality, the economics of coal-fuelled power stations is shunned owing to the surging unsustainable pressure by greener and sustainably priced fuels like solar, wind, and battery energy.

Sydney-based Origin Energy is brainstorming strategies to implement an enormous battery with a capacity of close to 700 megawatts at the site. The battery capacity is almost double the size of the nation’s most extensive prevailing facility – Neoen SA’s Victorian Big Battery.

BloombergNEF stated on Thursday that Origin Energy’s declaration resonates with the requirement to proceed with 3.5 years of notice before shutting a central plant like its scale. However, the constant surge in renewables generation and full approval of the rooftop solar scenario is most likely to inhibit the attractiveness of prevalent gas and coal generators.

According to the operator of the country’s central electricity market, Australia’s increasing energy transition will witness 50% of all homes mounted with rooftop solar in the dawn of the 2030s, assisting to offshoot an enhanced exit from coal-fuelled power generation.

Approximately 14 gigawatts of power generation capacity using coal could retire by the end of the decade. The Australian Energy Market Operator stated that over 5.4 gigawatts of exits are declared by far. The closure of coal plants is an indication that the country is brainstorming to develop and transform the electricity system over the next three decades.

Energy Minister Angus Taylor stated that the premature closure of Origin Energy’s Eraring plant positions the affordability and dependability of coal-fuelled plants at risk. Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, is an ardent ally of fossil fuels.

The 2,880-megawatt black coal Eraring power station is located around 75 miles north of Sydney and can satisfy approximately 1/4th of New South Wales’ power requirements. New South Wales is the most densely populated state of Australia. The Eraring power station emerged fully operational in 1984. The much-anticipated Eraring battery will be 460 megawatts in its initial stage, enhancing to 700 megawatts, comparable with AGL’s blueprint for an 850-megawatt battery by 2024 in its Lidell coal plant site.

In a statement, the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Energy Market Operator, Daniel Westerman, stated that the tactical strategy of the new battery alongside additional transmission capacity would allow the state to access sufficient electricity generation. In addition, the new-fangled battery would enable the state to accomplish the Energy Security Target when the Eraring facility closes.
